Trip to Haiti

Haiti is an incredibly creative place, filled w/artists of many kinds. The Nation has suffered greatly for a long time, but the creative spirit still continues to thrive. Since the artisan-section reaches widely throughout the culture/country, it has been identified as a key to the post earthquake reconstruction. There is a big problem of violence against women, and employing women in this sector helps the problem.

I was asked to come in as a visionary person by the Hand/Eye fund, through a major grant from the Clinton/Bush Haiti Fund, to help the artisans connect with the global market by increasing their export sales through my vision. I am on my way to Porte Au Prince, excited with the mission, overwhelmed with ideas, worried how much I could help yet very intrigued by what I am about to encounter.

I will be in Haiti for 5 days, the itinerary is jam packed with trips to different villages and camps including Sean Penn’s camp, where I will be visiting women artisans making beads out of paper, can you imagine??? I could, I already have a few designs in my head :)

Street arts in Porte Au Prince,bought 2 for gifts!

First day in Porte Au Prince, visiting a group of artisans making papered beads out of recycled boxes, such as cereal boxes.

These beads are beautiful, and time consuming to make, my mind is swirling thinking how to "Chanalize" these beads into a Chan Luu look,it will help feed many families in need here in Haiti.

Trying to give these artisans some new direction for new ideas how to evolve!
